What is sexy?

What is sexy?

A friend of mine recently told me that when he saw my profile picture on Facebook, it was such a far cry from the Ria he used to know.  He went on to say that he remembered how whenever we’d go around on trips and he’d try to shoot me, it was very difficult because I’d always get self-conscious. At that time, there was no way on earth you’d make me do a jump shot or something like this!

You see, much as many do not believe it, I am such a shy and insecure individual, someone who never was comfortable in her own skin and never trusted in her own abilities. For the longest time, I was content being in the background, hiding behind the shadows of what was familiar. Earlier this year, however, I discovered the practice of yoga and it has changed my life immensely, not just on the physical aspect.

This picture for me captures what sexy is…

Being sexy goes beyond the exterior…it’s being able to find that bit of confidence in you that allows you to let go of fear and to believe in yourself, to trust in your own abilities and potentials, and to know that you have the power in you to be the best you possible. It goes beyond fitting into a size 0-2 but comes with being able to love yourself inside and out, no matter what size, shape or condition you may be in.

Okay, you might wonder where this post is coming from..teehee. Let me back track a bit. A few weeks ago I wrote about the Samsung Notebook Series 9, which is touted as the sexiest netbook in the market nowadays. With a sleek and sexy design and specs that is sure to wow you, it is definitely one drool-worthy gadget.

Meet Piper :)

Oh dear Lord what have I done….

After saying I WILL NOT GIVE IN and buy yet another expensive gadget to play with, yesterday I found myself in the mall and it wasn’t long before my every trusty handy dandy credit card popped out of my wallet and found it’s way to the card swiper. Before I knew it, I had just toinked myself with another impulsive purchase.

Meet my iPad, Piper (errrr…corny much but yes, Piper…pronounced as pee-per…kasi isa siyang bonggang bonggang soshaling pad piper ba. teeeheeeheee. yes, rationalizing works :)).

Okay, the cognitive part of my brain is screaming “Why oh why, Ria” but…sometimes, we just do things that don’t make sense, right? Haha. Before I left the mall, I also made sure that I had a few basic essentials to keep Piper brand-spankin’ new and beautiful. First off I got a screen protector, which I realize is very important especially now that I have long nails. Errr…and let’s not forget how Bubba once accidentally scratched my camera’s LCD, right? I also went to get a one of those cases for it.

I really wanted a sleeve like one of these padded colorful bags/sleeves to match Apple’s case.

However,  I couldn’t find one that I liked and I was too tired to go to Rustan’s or Bratpack to check so I ended up with a lovely red faux leather case from the tiangge area of ATC. What I like about Apple’s sleeve is that it is not only so super cute, but it also has that extra padding that would protect my laptop. The one I got is kinda hard and padded, too, so I went with it.  Plus I love the color haha. But the one’s I really want are the neoprene kind. I actually wanted this whole set from Hellolulu because it has a thicker and more protective material, but like I said, I was too tired to go far and to look around to get one like this one:

They also have other products such as camera bags and travel accessories that will surely protect gadgets and luggage when in transit. I like that they’re lightweight,  compact and quite stylish I must say! :) Add to that, it sure is a more environmentally friendly alternative to my typical collection of ziplock bags for traveling hehe. Lookit!

cute black and pink DSLR bag for Nikki :)

mutli pouches for chargers, plugs and all other "abubot"

Besides Rustan’s and Bratpack, Hellolulu bags and accessories can be purchased at The Travel Club, Crossings / The Ramp, Duty Free – Fiesta Mall, Fashion Rack – Naia 3, Islands & More, Fullybooked and Le Grand Boutique – Naia 3. Do feel free to post comments or questions about Hellolulu here and I’ll try to help you out with the answers :)

I’m sooo happy with my new toy even if my credit card hates me right about now teeeheeeeheeee :)

Once on Mac, You Never Go Back…Or Do You???

One of the things I said I wanted to get this year is one of those cute little netbooks as an alternative for Apple, my red-shelled MacBook. So far I am still trying to decide if I want to do that (go back to a non-Mac lappy that is, hehe) or if I should just get an iPad or perhaps stick with the MacBook. To be fair, I still love Apple so very much and it has been serving me well. However, since my Apple Care (the Mac’s laptop warranty) has expired already, getting it repaired and serviced kinda costs an arm and a leg. In fact, recently I had to buy one of those magsafe chargers because the one that came with the unit got broken and it cost me almost Php 5,000.  Also, the battery has died out completely already and when I had it checked, I was informed that I used up all its charging cycles already (whatever that meant haha!).

A new one would cost me about Php 7,000. Now….do I really want to invest in that or should I just go get one of those smaller ones instead??? Haha. Like I said, I love my Mac but I see now that it’s LCD starting to flicker a bit and I’m kinda afraid it will need replacing soon. *sigh*

Let’s hope Gadget Claus brings me something good for Christmas, eh? ;-) hehe.

Sammy’s Great Beauty Shot Feature

I’ve written about my Samsung PL151 several times already but I can’t help but re-emphasize how much I love the beauty shot feature this camera has. I think several other Samsung models have the same feature, but I don’t know about other brands.

What I like about the Beauty Shot setting is that it retouches and clears up your face a whole lot. And it auto adjusts to the lighting in the area so you are almost always guaranteed a good portrait shot. I like how it makes your skin look so flawlessly smooth and clear. It’s kinda like having a built in automatic photoshop program in it! Plus, since its automatic, it does it all on it’s own. I swear it makes your skin look so good, it would seem that you had airbrushed on your make up or had really good acne treatment products which cleared up your skin to the highest heavens! Take a look at some of these shots:

Nice, right? However, the downside to this setting is that it is quite sensitive to movement, especially indoors. It takes a long time to process the shot so since you tend to be holding the camera at arms length (using the front lcd for self-portraits) you often end up with blurry shots, such as the last one. It takes some getting used to it, but I found that setting it on a tripod or the table helps greatly, but it kinda defeats the some of the dual LCD’s purpose, right? Nonetheless, I still love my Sammy to bits!

Do I recommend getting this? Well, if you’re looking for a basic point and shoot with fun features, this is a good enough choice. Plus it’s generally affordable, ranging from 10,999-13,999 for the PL series. The touch screen versions of the dual lcd Samsung cameras run up to about 21,999 as of the last time I checked.

Online Shopping Options

I am a self-confessed shopaholic.

Yup, I often find myself in deep trouble because I shop too impulsively and with little thought checking out better deals. If I see something I like, I would likely walk out of the store with it.

Enter Online Shopping. What I like about shopping online is that it is quite easy to compare prices and see which is the best deal for my money. Also, it allows me to check out similar products that may actually be better than the one I am looking at. In real life shopping, that would entail a lot of walking and time but online, it’s quick and easy. I am, however, still sometimes a bit cautious about where I shop online, especially if I have not tried ordering from these sites yet.

One of the sites I recently came across while trying to look at iPads (yes, I still want one, even if I know I don’t really need it!) is eBillme.com. I am still exploring the site and checking out how it works, so I have not personally tried to order yet but what appears to be a good selling point in my opinion is that 1.) it offers an iron-clad Buyer Protection Program and 2.) you get rebates through purchases and 3.) you can use coupons to get even more discounts. For example, in searching for the iPad, there are abt electronics coupons I can use to get a sweeter deal on my dream gadget. Given today’s economy, that’s great, right?

PC crashes and buzzy noises

My PC has been acting up lately. While I work, it suddenly lets out this long buzzy sound (sometimes it goes buzzz….buzzzz…buzzzz) then it dies. Sometimes, it kicks right back up when I restart but at times, it doesn’t. The last time this happened, it even had lots of lines scrolling all over the screen. It was like it was possessed! When I took it to the repair shop, I was told it was something about the memory things not being read, perhaps because it was dirty. So the guy took it out and ran a pencil eraser through it. I have a suspicion this is what’s going on with my PC again. I’m a little bit afraid to try resolving the issue myself though. However, I think I should address it before the problem escalates. It happened twice today, for example. Talk about annoying. I was right in the middle of uploading photos on my Flickr page and doing some research about nuphedragen among other things. Because of the interruption, I decided to switch back to Apple, my trust red-crusted Mac. I hope this PC problem is not a big thing…I still have files that are important in the PC!

Trying Open Office.

As a Mac user who refuses to buy Microsoft Office for Mac, I’ve had to find alternatives for the popular and easily-accessible Word, Powerpoint and Excel. Mac has a good counterpart for it, namely Pages and Keynote. However, because I’ve gotten so used to Microsoft office, getting the hang of the layout and feel of Pages and Keynote is a bit difficult. I still get confused about animating my powerpoint texts, for example. However, the transitions and effects of Keynote are WOW! That’s all I can say!!! I remember that when I was in Cebu for a convention, I used Keynote for my presentation and after the first slide, the audience went woooah!!!! :-)

However, since I need to compute grades, I need a spreadsheet program. I don’t know why I don’t have the Mac equivalent, which is Numbers. I must have deleted it accidentally or something when I removed all the programs that I don’t use. So since I needed an Excel equivalent and I couldn’t afford the installer discs of Office 2008 for Mac, I downloaded Open Office. So far it’s been pretty smooth sailing, but I’ve noticed some little differences with the shortcuts in the two programs. That’s about it though.

Will continue to test it more. My ultimate test, however, will be the ease of it’s Powerpoint counterpart. However, since it’s term break, that will have to wait. For now, I’m going on vacay mode!
