It’s More than Just about Beauty at The Body Shop

The Body Shop goes beyond just beauty with their latest campaign to stop sex trafficking of children and young people. Launched last August 13, 2010 and in partnership with EPCAT International (or End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography and the Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes), a global network of independent, grassroots organizations working around the world for the protection of children and young people,  the campaign aims to gather 500,000 signatures to be presented to our very own president, Benigno Aquino, in order to raise awareness and fight for better representation for this growing problem.

Last Saturday, I joined in the campaign with a handful of fellow bloggers as we too raised our hands to say NO to Sex Trafficking.

Some facts about the Human Trafficking Trade:

  • Did you know that Human Trafficking is the third largest criminal industry in the world?
  • Over 1.2 million children and young people under 18 are victims of human trafficking each year.
  • These children and young people are peddled as prostitutes, sex slaves, and cheap laborers
  • The Philippines ranks 4th worldwide in terms of the highest number of prostituted children and young people.

In all honesty, the problem of human trafficking is a worldwide one and despite all efforts to contain it, the industry keeps growing. However, we should not allow this to continue to hurt and enslave millions of women, children and young people around the world.

What can you do?

  • Join in the fight against human trafficking by trooping to a Body Shop outlet near you and sign their in-store petition. A huge tracker is displayed by their counter which keeps tab on the number of petitions signed. Let’s join in and help make a mark!
  • You can also sign the petition online at www.thebodyshop.com.ph
  • Donate and help EPCAT 🙂
  • Check out The Body Shop on Facebook and spread the word about this campaign
  • Purchase The Body Shop’s Soft Hands Kind Heart Hand Cream and Stop Sex Trafficking Bag for life to help raise crucial funds for the care, rehabilitation and support of victims of sex trafficking. ALL PROCEEDS of the sale of these items go to EPCAT Philippines and is used for temporary shelter, education, counseling and legal assistance of victims.
